Madurai: The Madras high court on Tuesday directed the central and the state governments to favourably consider the representations made by the sportspersons with intellectual disabilities seeking to treat them on a par with regular sportspersons.
A division bench of justice R Mahadevan and justice J Sathya Narayana Prasad passed the order while hearing a batch of petitions filed before the HC Madurai bench in 2019.
The petitioners stated that they had taken part in various national and international level events and won medals. However, the central and state governments failed to appreciate the laurels brought by them to the country.
The petitioners stated that benefits such as monetary and employment which are conferred to the regular sportspersons should be conferred to those with intellectual disabilities as well. They added that they should be treated on a par with regular sportspersons.
