Lucknow: Ten disabled bag DSMNRU medals

LUCKNOW: If you have a passion for learning then nothing, not even physical challenges, can come in your way to success. That's what specially abled students of Dr Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University (DSMNRU) Lucknow have proved by clinching medals while competing with their counterparts with no disability.

As many as 10 specially-abled students have won medals in the final list announced by the University on Friday. A total of 150 medals will be awarded to 110 DSMNRU students, of which 17 medals have gone to the kitty of special students.

Leading the list is visually impaired BEd student Monu Singh, who has bagged five gold medals. Monu has already qualified for the National Eligibility Test. Another special student Pramod Kumar of MA (Hindi) has bagged three medals while visually impaired M.Com student Hemant Kumar Mull has won two medals.

"I had never ever thought that I would win five medals, including the prestigious CM gold medal for scoring highest in my faculty," said Monu Singh, a BEd (special education) student.

Hailing from Jalaun district, he says back in his hometown not everyone is aware of the education opportunities that visually impaired students have in the country. "I want to become a teacher so that I can spread awareness. My three brothers are visually impaired and my father Jagdeep Singh does odd jobs to make both ends meet. I want to become a government teacher so that I can support my family," he added.

Other special students who won medals in various categories are MA Hindi student Pramod Kumar (silver medal), MA Hindi student Shaban Ali (bronze medal), MA (sociology) student Radhika Rawat, social work student Nagesh Kumar (bronze medal), BEd student Purnima Pandey (silver medal), BEd student Sumitra (Bronze medal) and Master of Law student Abhishek (bronze medal).
