Higher edu dept glare on fake disability certs dtd. 26.4.2022 (Advocacy)

Bhubaneswar: In a bid to detect those who have taken admissions to various colleges and universities using fake disability credentials, the higher education department, as part of its ongoing drive, on Monday urged the MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, to examine the disability certificates of three students.

The department has sent the names of the students who are pursuing undergraduate studies in two leading colleges of Berhampur in the 2021-23 session. Of the three students, two have submitted certificates for blindness and poor vision, while the third one a proof of locomotor disability. The trio were chosen during the spot selection against vacant seats for the disabled.
As per government instructions, the genuineness of disability candidates should be ensured from the state-appellate medical board before a candidate’s admission is confirmed.
On April 8, the higher education department cancelled the admission of eight students of BJB Autonomous College here as they had taken admission by submitting fake disability certificates for 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 sessions. On April5, the college filed a complaint with Badagada police against the students.

A teacher at the premier college said few students and their parents resort to such illegal acts during admission. “If a regular student says he/she cannot see things clearly and submits a fake dsiability certificate, what can we do? There is no scope to detect such forgery during the busy admission process. This is why we send these certificates for verification,” he added.
