Youth overcomes disability to secure rank in BCom dtd 18.4.2022 (Success story)

Mangaluru: Physical disability did not deter Adithya Bhat, who is not able to walk, from bagging a rank in the BCom final-year exam

Bhat,21, a student at Sri Rama Degree College, Kalladka, in Dakshina Kannada district, has bagged the ninth rank in the examination conducted by Mangaluru University. Bhat will receive the honour from governor and chancellor of Mangalore University, Thawar Chand Gehlot, during the 40th annual convocation of Mangalore University on April 23.
Bhat, the son of farmer Ganesh Bhat and Usha from Soorikumeru village of Bantwal taluk, scored 93.85% marks in the BCom examination, scoring 100% in accountancy in all six semesters. Suffering from muscular dystrophy that causes progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass, Bhat studied meticulously, so that he could achieve success. He had scored 96.4% in the SSLC exam, and 96% in PU with commerce.
Bhat told TOI that he wants to attempt competitive exams. “I could achieve this because of the support of my parents, lecturers and classmates. I am interested in appearing for competitive exams in the banking sector. I have been preparing online for them,” he said.

Recalling the support from his college management, he said, “For three years, they arranged classrooms for the entire BCom batch, on the ground floor, to help me. My classmates and lecturers would help me in getting food in the noon, in washing my hands, and also give me support for other activities in the college.”
His father Ganesh Bhat told TOI that initially they did not notice the disability of their child. “He was academically brilliant since childhood. When he was 6-8 years, we noticed weakness in his muscles. He uses a wheelchair to move around, and I used to drop him to the college and pick him up after classes, daily in the car,” he said, thanking college principal Krishnaprasad Kayarkatte, management and lecturers for their support.
“Though he is preparing online for competitive exams, we have also brought necessary books for him,’’ he added.
